Research

Dissertation Research

Principle Researcher Mar 2017 — Dec 2021

  • Developed and conducted an interview-based study with a group of seven participants regarding the dancer’s lived experience of work-life transition out of performance.

  • Data was collected using the qualitative methods of portraiture and body stories.

  • Through this methodological combination, the research ultimately painted Embodied Narrative Portraits of the specific challenges faced by dancers when they make a complex work-life transition.

  • Participant in a collaborative process of co-creating a spoken-word- and-movement performance based on existing data from a study on the embodied experience of oppression.  

  • Focusing on analyzing data through movement, and using movement to convey a different (somatic) layer of information.

Adjunct, Dance Teacher Aug 2009 — June 2011

  • Taught modern, jazz, and tap to beginning students, as well as performing arts students.

  • Choreographed dances for recitals, student productions, as well as main-stage productions. Mentored students in developing performances.

Staff, Assistant Technical Director Jan 2008 — June 2011

  • Assisted in all technical aspects (set, lights, sound, props) of over 12 university productions.

  • Responsible for regular maintenance of the theatre facilities.

  • Managed theatre for rental groups, including design meetings, space preparation, event operation, and invoicing/billing.

  • Worked successfully in coordination with all levels of university personnel (ranging from students to the university President).

  • Successful experience with crisis management and multi-tasking.  

  • Partially responsible for student-worker management and supervision.

  • Taught tap, modern, and hip hop to both beginning and advanced students.

Theatre Experience

Drury Lane Theatre — Chicago, IL 

Stage Manager (AEA) July 2011 — May 2013

  • Managed two Theatre for Young Audiences (TYA) productions.

  • Duties included: adherence to union contract to ensure safety of performers; running rehearsals in a timely manner; keeping accurate blocking notes; efficiently running technical rehearsals; maintenance of show during performances; scheduling and running weekly understudy rehearsals; successful communication with director, production team, box office staff, and cast members

Run Crew July 2011 — May 2013

  • Worked backstage on run crew for several productions.

  • Duties included: moving set pieces; running technical effects; regular maintenance of the set. Successfully navigated a high-intensity environment, requiring consistent precision teamwork.  

First Folio Theatre — Chicago, IL

Stage Manager (AEA) Aug 2011 — Feb 2013

  • Managed three touring TYA productions involving stage combat (utilizing various historical weapons), often performed in non-traditional theatre settings.

  • Coordinated on-site with school representatives to ensure safety for audience and performers, as well as foster an open learning environment.  Maintained integrity of productions in the absence of a director through regular rehearsals.

  • Managed six Small Professional Theatre (SPT) productions.
